Intentions

Intentions are rendered drab

Without forceful capital

And determination excessive

Where comparative differences

Rest solely in the hands of brutalities

Overlooked by tempered ignorance,

But castigated are those who dare question

Indignation potent,

A reflection of dire dichotomies

Between banal regimes and those whose silence

Relegates their actions to deviance culpable,

But plain-speak does little to ensure productive dialogue

Where idle threats dominate media agendas

Until nations become folk devils

Turned globally critical,

Where no land is spared from feverish wrath

And interests are consistently maneuvered

To the faint pulse of gelid balance sheet,

A consequence of contemporary economic disillusionment

Subsumed by a voracious hunger

To break free of charitable labels

And all-encompassing pity,

But replaced by bureaucratic incompetence

And intentions lacking true capital

Let alone determination directed.

De Hoofdstad

The throngs of the mechanical

Are only tempered by scotch dry

And fields painted morose

By late summer precipitation,

On a land where polders brace

Constructions numerous

And ardent in centuries

Of combat against

A northern sea obstinate

In its domination

Of fluorescent pastures

Overcome by farmed fauna,

But beyond meadows lush

Resides a populous arcane

In its perseverance

Against waters murky,

Only ever challenged by canals

That sparkle under emerald smoke,

A symbol of tolerance grandiose,

Only eclipsed by hordes of desecration

Consuming fries frivolous

As bystanders trek to dwellings ornate,

And clouds christen nightly jaunts

With speckled lubricant,

A reminder that the sea is rising

Just beyond de Hoofdstad*.
